Listen! Beowulf is the foundations of English literature –
it’s our only native English heroic epic, composed in the
eighth century AD. This production, through a mixture of
storytelling, music and drama will tell the story of
Beowulf, bringing back to life this ancient tale of heroes
and monsters, life and death.
‘In a place far from libraries I have often read
Beowulf for pleasure’ K. Sisam, 1965.
You are cordially invited to witness this epic story told
on a human scale with a versatile cast of seven and one
dragon puppet – a celebration of the power of the age-old
(but also ageless) art of storytelling. Our production takes
the epic poem, dusts off its cobwebs and takes it to a place
far from tweedy academics and Eng lit students – far from
libraries – to a place where musical theatre meets folklore,
single mums and their delinquent sons terrorise innocent
revellers and guitarists do battle with pianists.
Written and adapted by Guy Jones, Michael Betteridge,
John Elliott, Trevor Thomson and the cast.
